It was absolutely fantastic. Natalie Dessay is France's most celebrated operatic diva since Regine Crespin and was truly mesmerizing. Her voice and acting were superb and was coupled by the fantastic singing and acting both of Ludovic Tezier and Charles Castronovo. Both Tezier and Castronovo were brilliant performers and singers. Verdi's La Traviata is such a passionate love...

Review by Meredith Nierenberg April 18, 2013 Sarasota Ballet's La Fille mal Gardée (The Wayward Daughter) The Ballet, “La Fille mal Gardee”, The Wayward Daughter, was a lot of fun. There was plenty of laughter, smiling all around the theatre. It was a most beautiful, expressive and enticing, romantic comedy brought about by the famous choreographer, Frederick Ashton’s, 1960 version. This ballet is about a country girl, played by Kate Honea, who prefers a handsome, local, penniless farmer, played by Ricardo Graziano, over the childlike, wealthy, nervous and not so cute boy, Alain, played by Logan Learned, that her mother, the...

Review by: Meredith Nierenberg   April 10, 2013     Candida, a play written by George Bernard Shaw, was excellent. It was held in the Cook Theatre at the Aslo Rep. The students from the Conservatory were wonderful.   I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found the production of the play was just as good as the Asolo Rep.   Candida is about the domestic turmoil between a progressive-minded clergyman, by the name of James and his charismatic wife, Candida. The turmoil is caused by the young, 18 year old, very nervous, shy poet, by the name of Eugene Marchbanks. Well, Mr....

March 28, 2013 Steinway Society of Sarasota, Inc. Presents... I had the opportunity recently to hear truly beautiful music from the pianist, Arthur Brown. Arthur is the recipient of the Steinway Society of Sarasota, Inc. scholarship. Not only did Arthur play music from Frederic Chopin, he played music that he composed himself. Arthur’s fascination with music began the moment he started playing the violin, under the instruction of Mrs. Angela Hartvicson. He enjoyed every opportunity to listen to classical music whenever he could. He started playing the piano in the latter part of 6 th grade by teaching himself, before he...

Review: 3/3/13   On Sunday, I had the opportunity to see the Sarasota Ballet at the Asolo Repertory Theatre. It consisted of three ballets: Les Rendezvous, choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton, Lilac Garden, choreographed by Antony Tudor, and I Napoletani, choreographed by Dominic Walsh.   They were all wonderful. Les Rendezvous was a traditional ballet. The Principal Girl, Victoria Hulland and the Principal Boy, Ricardo Graziano, were fabulous. And of course along with the rest of the dancers. Their poise and grace were outstanding and genuine.   I Napoletani was fun. It was set to Italian music and props were used....

Review: 3/2/13 The Acting Company’s AS YOU LIKE IT Directed by Dan Rothenberg Shakespeare's light hearted comedy 'As You Like It' came to The New Victory Theater and came in with a bang! Directed by Dan Rothenberg, the production begins with an almost Jazz like feel. The actors are very animated and truly come into their own during the second act which is fast moving. The scenery changes from the Jazz environment to most of the play appearing to be a graphic jungle with lush landscapes. Drama and wit center around the main character, Rosalind, who is played by Elizabeth Stahlman-who brings...

Review: March 1, 2013 Tonight I could have been sitting in a concert hall in Vienna as I listened to the mesmerizing Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. From the minute, the charismatic and celebrated conductor, Franz Welser-Möst walked on stage and began working his magic, everyone sat in awe. Each piece had its own story and intensity. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is probably the most closely associated with the history and tradition of European classical music. In the course of its 171 year history, the mostly male orchestra with 4 female musicians travel throughout the world. Their mission is to communicate...

Review: 1/30/13By: Andrea NierenbergWatching musical theater in creation - was the epitome of One Night Stand, a documentary about four short musicals that are written, rehearsed and performed in 24 hours. You are behind the scenes watching all the emotions the actors, writers and choreographers go through. It is also lots of fun and funny to almost feel that you are part of the cast. The show opened and closed in one night-- truly a 'One Night Stand'. I watched it in New York at the legendary Ziegfeld and it also played in 450 theaters across the country.Starting off with the creative...
