Increased Demand for Authentic Safari Adventure Inspires Expansion of Award-Winning Selinda Explorers Camp

Out of the Land Cruiser and into the Canoe

April 9, 2015 – An ever–growing number of global adventure travelers are looking to experience Africa much the same way early 20th century travelers did, getting closer to nature and doing so with a combination of old world style and modern sustainability.

Great Plains Conservation, one of Africa’s most celebrated conservation organizations, operates award–winning safari camps and lodges throughout Kenya and Botswana, and has long been a leader in enhancing the traditional safari experience.

The newly renovated and expanded Selinda Explorers Camp offers adventurous guests a blend of European comfort and African craftsmanship in stunning waterside settings in Botswana’s famed 320,000 Selinda Reserve. Once you’ve finished your breakfast on the river’s edge, guided fly–fishing, bird watching with Swarovski binoculars or canoeing awaits. Morning and night game drives, picnics and walking safaris are guest favorites.

Offering guests from across the world a chance to become participants rather than merely observers is an experience the owners of Selinda Explorers Camp are more than happy to create. Dereck and Beverly Joubert, CEO of Great Plains Conservation, are Emmy–winning wildlife filmmakers, conservationists and National Geographic Explorers–in–Residence who have spent much of their lives in the African bush.

Dereck Joubert recently wrote, “in March, Beverly and I erected and furnished a brand new main area for Selinda Explorers Camp, decorated with red Bedouin rugs with furnishings and hammocks from Zanzibar and the East.” The camp, which consists of two “Meru” style tents — large, rectangular tents with openings front and side — includes the large lounge tent, a dining tent and four sleeping tents on the banks of the region’s primary waterway . This oasis is home to abundant wildlife including elephant, lion, cheetah, leopard, buffalo and a variety of antelope who come to bathe and drink in the Selinda Spillway.

“A magic place with the authenticity of original safari camps” a guest writes, “Africa but with luxury, simplicity and sophistication that only the Jouberts can achieve.”
