Growing Angraecums: Exotic orchids that thrive in Southwest Florida

Presented by Tim Kuligowski

Naples, FL, Mar. 27, 2015 – It’s surprising that most orchid hobbyists in Southwest Florida know very little about Angraecums, especially when the orchids thrive in South Florida’s sub-tropics.

The Gulf Coast Orchid Alliance invites you to a presentation by Tom Kuligowski at its “Third Thursday” Member Event on April 16, 2015 at the Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church at 1225 Piper Blvd., Naples, FL 34110 from 6:30–8:30 pm. Guests are welcome at no charge.

Angraecums are known for their beautiful showy flowers, some of which give off nocturnal fragrances. The orchids can grow to become fantastic specimen plants within only a few years. They are easy to grow in Southwest Florida, and can even thrive on a windowsill in the not so warm north.

Tom Kuligowski has been a photographer for over 46 years, and has spent the last 22 years also as a digital graphic designer. He’s been growing orchids for over 23 years, and is the official photographer for the American Orchid Society’s West Palm Beach Judging Center. Tom created and maintains a blog just about Angraecums, so hobbyists as well as professional growers can share information.

Another highlight of the evening will be the Monthly Exhibition Judging, where Alliance members participate as exhibitors as well as judges, winning accolades for beautifully grown plants.

An orchid raffle will be held, and the speaker will be selling exotic tropical orchids from his private available collection.

The Alliance welcomes new members! Come and learn with us! The Gulf Coast Orchid Alliance is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization formed in 2012 to promote interest in orchids – focusing on orchid education, community outreach and orchid conservation – and to bring people together in an enjoyable, inclusive atmosphere.

The Alliance also sponsors a year-round “Orchid Rescue Mission”, taking donations of out-of-bloom or unwanted orchids that are then used for educational purposes. Free pick up is available: call 239-498-9741.
