Spotlighting Grand Avenue’s status as a vibrant world-class arts destination, 11 cultural organizations along this arts-centric stretch of Bunker Hill in downtown Los Angeles are presenting a free one-day cultural event, GRAND AVE ARTS: ALL ACCESS, on Saturday, October 24, from 10 am to 5 pm, on Grand Avenue between Temple and Sixth streets that will feature performances, exhibitions, behind-the-scenes tours, and interactive, family-friendly activities.  Participating institutions include The Broad museum, Center Theatre Group, Colburn School, Grand Park, LA Opera, Los Angeles Central Library, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Los Angeles Philharmonic, MOCA, The Music Center and REDCAT.  GRAND AVE ARTS: ALL ACCESS is also designed to welcome The Broad, opening September 20, as it joins the arts pacesetters along Grand Avenue, which, since the Central Library’s dedication in 1926 and the grand opening of The Music Center in 1964 has become a magnet for many of Los Angeles’ most prominent cultural institutions.

“Grand Avenue is acclaimed for its unrivaled collection of cultural landmarks, museums and performance organizations presenting some of the most dynamic exhibitions, collections and arts programming in the world,” says Howard Sherman, interim president and CEO of The Music Center.  “GRAND AVE ARTS: ALL ACCESS provides a unique opportunity to share this incredible art and artistry and these amazing facilities with the entire community.  A local, national and international treasure, Grand Avenue has become a distinctive centerpiece of Downtown Los Angeles, helping to foster its revitalization.  This lively cultural hub attracts visitors from around the globe, generating significant income for Southland businesses, as well as engendering great civic pride.  It has also been a source of tremendous artistic innovation lauded by international media and showcases disparate cultural perspectives from the region and beyond.”

“Having long advocated for the thoughtful development of Grand Avenue into the vibrant cultural center of Los Angeles, it is extremely gratifying for The Broad to join this group of flagship institutions, further strengthening the area’s arts offerings and reputation,” states Eli Broad, philanthropist and founder of The Broad.  “It takes great vision and fortitude to forge the cultural heart of a metropolis.  We salute everyone who has contributed over the decades to making this vision a reality and those whose dedicated efforts today will ensure Grand Avenue’s cultural legacy continues to grow in the future.”

Colorful banners and signage help guide visitors as they enjoy such GRAND AVE ARTS: ALL ACCESS highlights as:

•    Architectural tours of The Broad, the newest addition to Grand Avenue, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, which features two floors of gallery space to showcase the Broad’s comprehensive collection of postwar and contemporary art; and, on the plaza next to The Broad, musician Tim Hecker’s hypnotic and ethereal sound installation “Really Eternal Music,” a multi-channel sound piece that references La Monte Young’s classic minimalist drone music from the Black Record and, in keeping with Grand Avenue itself, reflects on our city’s prolific contribution to the arts;

•    Live a cappella performances by the renowned Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Master Chorale, led by Artistic Director Grant Gershon and featuring eclectic works by National Medal of Art recipient Meredith Monk, Arvo Pärt, Moses Hogan, Shawn Kirchner and others, in Walt Disney Concert Hall’s soaring BP Hall;

•    A working orchestra rehearsal of LA Opera’s production of Jake Heggie’s thrilling opera Moby-Dick; a recital featuring singers from LA Opera’s prestigious Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program; and an exhibition of LA Opera costumes, wigs, set design and more at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion;

•    A compelling, large-scale, colorful Día de los Muertos art installation, including more than 75 altars and stunning art pieces enhanced by dance performances, spanning both The Music Center Plaza and Grand Park, with its majestic views extending from The Music Center to City Hall; and special Día de los Muertos-themed hands-on workshops presented by The Music Center in the lobby of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion;

•    Free admission to MOCA – devoted exclusively to contemporary art – plus tours of its noted permanent collection exhibition organized by Chief Curator Helen Molesworth, and art-related activities on its lively outdoor plaza;

•    Fascinating behind-the-scenes tours of The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum and Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, for which visitors will get the rare opportunity to see inside the auditorium;

•    Center Theatre Group-sponsored family crafts and activities based on the play The Sound of Music; fun photo ops with theatrical puppets and masks from Center Theatre Group’s performance of the Mayan creation myth with an L.A. twist Popol Vuh: Heart of Heaven created in collaboration with the internationally renowned theatre company El Teatro Campesino; and a “prize wheel” offering chances to win tickets and swag from the participating organizations;

•    Screenings of award-winning short animated children’s films at REDCAT, CalArts’ downtown center for the contemporary arts, located inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex; a walk-through of the set for the upcoming production of Blacktop Highway by “unclassifiable” solo performer John Fleck, a journey into a darkly hilarious world that sets the mood for Halloween; and guided tours of the Gallery exhibit “Hotel Theory,” exploring the possibilities of theory as an art form through a range of new work by emerging artists and seminal works by established artists;

•    The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s “VAN Beethoven,” an innovative mobile experience now touring L.A. that utilizes an Oculus virtual reality headset to transport audiences inside Walt Disney Concert Hall for a 360° 3-D performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, featuring the opening of Beethoven’s timeless Fifth Symphony;

•    Los Angeles Central Library‘s enlightening exhibition “To Live and Dine in LA,” a collection of historic LA menus from the past century; and tours of the landmark 1926 library, which, along with its 72 branch libraries, serves the largest and most diverse audience of any library system in the nation;

•    Guided tours of the Colburn School, which provides top-level performing arts education to students at all levels of development; and a performance by students of the Colburn Music Academy, the academic unit of the school that prepares exceptional pre-college artists for careers as well-rounded professional musicians.

In addition to these activities and more, many of the restaurants of the participating organizations are offering discounts on food and beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), plus a fleet of food trucks parked by Grand Park provides other delectable dining options.
