SARASOTA COUNTY – Financial professionals and non-profit agencies will host a variety of presentations during “Money Smart Week @ Your Library,” April 18-25 at Sarasota County Libraries. This full week of free events is provided to help people of all ages better manage and protect their finances. Topics include investing wisely; buying homes; setting up wills, trusts and estates; senior scams; and identity theft.

The week starts off with a program at 2 p.m. Monday, April 20, at Elsie Quirk Public Library, 100 W. Dearborn St., Englewood. “What You Need to Know About Wills, Trusts, and Estate Planning Under Florida Homestead Laws” will be presented by attorney Dorothy Korszen.

Gulf Gate Public Library, 7112 Curtiss Ave., Sarasota, will host “Buy The House I Love or Love The House I Can Afford?” at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 21. Then at 5:30 p.m. that day, Jacaranda Public Library, 4143 Woodmere Park Blvd., Venice, hosts “Rent Or Own?” where you’ll learn how to decide which housing option is right for you and what questions to ask yourself to help you make the best decision. Both sessions are presented by Sandee Rains, a financial education specialist with CredAbility.

At 2 p.m. Wednesday April 22, at Selby Public Library, 1331 1st St, Sarasota, attorney Neil Scott helps you find out “How Wills, Trusts and Probate Work in Florida” and how advance directives (durable power of attorney, etc.) may help you avoid legal guardianship. At 3:30 p.m., Jacaranda Library offers “Money Smarts: Achieving Financial Independence Using the Psychology of Money.” Psychologist and internationally published author Dr. Paul Powers will share his findings on how you can use psychological savvy to achieve your financial and life goals.

Rains will also present “Senior Scams & Identity Theft” at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at the Jacaranda Library. Participants will learn how to prevent identity theft and what to do if it happens. Topics include: learning how identity theft occurs, minimizing risk, resolving subsequent credit problems and identifying federal, state and local government resources if you are a victim of identity theft.
