Brings World-Renowned Dance Crew The Flying Steps
to Chicago for Six Performances Only
At Civic Opera House, June 20-29
CHICAGO (May 14, 2014) – This summer, Red Bull Flying Bach lands in Chicago, making its U.S. debut in an exclusive Chicago engagement after three seasons of sold-out performances around the world. Featuring Berlin-based dance crew The Flying Steps, four-time break dance world champions, Red Bull Flying Bach combines contemporary hip-hop power moves with live classical music. Red Bull Flying Bach runs for six performances only at the historic Civic Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Drive, June 20 – 29.
Berlin-based opera director and pianist extraordinaire Christoph Hagel serves as Music Director, performing Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier live for each show. In between Bach’s rolling preludes and fugues for solo piano and harpsichord, electronic beats created by Ketan and Vivian Bhatti remix the well-known melodies into explosive anthems.
The show itself, 70 minutes in length, features the seven break dancers of The Flying Steps along with contemporary Swedish dancer Anna Holmström in a lively series of vignettes, each showing off the multi-talented dancers’ strengths, including a dazzling array of breaking, popping & locking, flares, head spins, hand spins, footwork, acrobatics and unison work. A loose storyline follows the dancers in the rehearsal studio as they prepare for a major competition. The inner conflicts among the group melt away when a new girl enters the studio and the dynamic completely changes. Note by note and step by step, The Flying Steps bridge the worlds of break dance and classical music with playful rhythms and contagious energy. Red Bull Flying Bach is choreographed by Flying Steps Artistic Director and dancer, Vartan Bassil.
Red Bull Flying Bach has sold out theaters in Austria, Australia, Canada, Chile, Germany, Iceland, Japan, Russia and Sweden.

Tickets, ranging from $24 to $88, are now on sale at Ticketmaster.com or by visiting the Civic Opera House box office. Red Bull Flying Bach is performed over two weekends only: Friday and Saturday evenings, June 20, 21, 27 & 28, at 7:30pm, and Sunday afternoons, June 22 & 29, at 2pm.
About The Flying Steps
The Flying Steps are one of the most successful urban dance crews worldwide with breathtaking shows and one-of-a-kind choreography, appealing to a diverse audience. The group was founded by Vartan Bassil and Kadir “Amigo” Memis in 1993 in Berlin. The Flying Steps specialize in urban dance styles like b-boying and popping & locking and have won several world championships, like the Battle of the Year and Red Bull Beat Battle.
