Dave Matthews Band formed in Charlottesville in early 1991 when vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews sought out a few local musicians – including drummer Carter Beauford, saxophonist LeRoi Moore, bassist Stefan Lessard and violinist Boyd Tinsley – to help him record a demo of some songs he had written. The band’s first public performances were at a Middle East Children’s Alliance Benefit at Trax Nightclub on March 14, 1991 and at the City of Charlottesville’s Earth Day Festival in April of that same year. Dave Matthews Band’s first official gig was on May 11, 1991 at a private party held on the rooftop of a downtown Charlottesville warehouse.
The band has always had a special connection to Charlottesville, where it honed its live show on local stages. In 1993, Dave Matthews Band self-released its first album, Remember Two Things. The band signed with RCA Records and released its first studio album, Under The Table and Dreaming, in 1994. They celebrated its release with a show in Charlottesville, where the mayor had proclaimed it “Dave Matthews Band Day.”
Since then, Dave Matthews Band has sold more than 20 million tickets and a collective 38 million CDs and DVDs combined. It is the first group in history to have six consecutive studio albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 – Before These Crowded Streets, Everyday, Busted Stuff, Stand Up, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King and Away from the World.
