Nine-time GRAMMY® nominee and saxophonist extraordinaire Dave Koz pairs up with the legendary Valerie Simpson of Ashford and Simpson for a special holiday performance on “The Wendy Williams Show” next Tuesday, December 6. Check local listings for details or visit http://www.wendyshow.com/the-show/#showtimes.
Koz, who describes Simpson as “Motown royalty…the R&B Carole King,” was ecstatic when she agreed to join him on his 2016 Christmas tour. It marks her first tour since the death of her husband and performing/songwriting/producing partner, Nick Ashford, five years ago. Together, the couple wrote such classic hits such as “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “You’re All I Need to Get By,” “Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand” and “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing.” Performing and recording as Ashford and Simpson, they also scored numerous hits, including the R&B chart-topper “Solid.” Simpson recently released a new solo album, Dinosaurs Are Coming Back Again.
The line-up of Koz’s holiday tour changes each year, keeping the festivities fresh and drawing fans back year after year. Koz usually puts together a mixture of vocalists and instrumentalists, but this year’s lineup is the first-ever to feature three vocalists. In addition to Simpson, the 19th anniversary edition of the tour features special guests Jonathan Butler and GRAMMY-nominated singer/songwriter Kenny Lattimore. 2016 marks “alumni” Butler’s 10th consecutive year on the holiday outing. He has earned accolades in the R&B, contemporary jazz and gospel fields, and recently released a new studio album entitled Free. Hailed by The New York Times as a “modern soul man.” Lattimore recently released his first holiday album, A Kenny Lattimore Christmas.
Together, the four remarkable artists perform fresh renditions of Christmas classics as well as a Chanukah medley and hits from their respective catalogs. The soulful, high-energy show comes to Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta tonight. The run will include shows at the National Theatre in Washington, DC (December 3), New York City’s Town Hall (December 6), the Chicago Theatre in Chicago, IL (December 11), the Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center in El Paso, TX (December 13) and Koz’s traditional two-night stand at Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Cerritos, CA (December 16 & 17).See below for itinerary. Tickets are available now at http://davekoz.com/tour/.
“Time to get into the Christmas spirit again, because Santa Koz is coming to town!” urged Miami.com prior to the tour’s post-Thanksgiving launch with performances in six Florida cities. “Some might say it wouldn’t be Christmas without Santa, but in El Paso, it’s not Christmas until Dave Koz comes to town,” said the El Paso Times.
“By all rights, smooth jazz should own the holiday season, and the saxophonist Dave Koz is better positioned than anyone to make it so,” noted The New York Times in a review of his fourth Christmas album, The 25th of December. The album, which features duets with top pop and jazz artists, spent eight consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Current Contemporary Jazz Album chart. The 25th of December is available as a CD, download and on red vinyl at http://davekoz.com/shop/music/dave-koz-the-25th-of-december/.
