Curtis Students, Faculty, and Alumni Tour the East Coast March 17-21; Performances in Boston, Cape Cod, and New Brunswick, N.J.
Works by Debussy, Ravel, Lowell Liebermann, Richard Danielpour and student composer Alyssa Weinberg
PHILADELPHIA—March 9, 2016— “Both a conservatory and a buzzword…known for taking the best music students in the world” (Washington Post), the Curtis Institute of Music tours the East Coast this spring.
Praised for performances that are “bright and polished” (Miami Herald), Curtis on Tour brings together an ensemble of students, faculty, and alumni for performances in Orleans, Mass. (March 17) presented by the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival; at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass. (March 18); at the Gardner Museum in Boston (March 20); and at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. (March 21). A free Philadelphia preview recital takes place Monday, March 14 at 8 p.m. in Field Concert Hall.
| The program features chamber arrangements of Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and Ravel’s Shéhérazade, as well as Debussy’s Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp. Music by these Impressionist masters is offered alongside Lowell Liebermann’s Sonata for Flute and Harp, Curtis faculty member Richard Danielpour’s vocal work Beloved Night, and a work for violin and cello by student composer Alyssa Weinberg, flutter/drive/wander.
Elizabeth Hainen, principal harp of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Scott St. John (Violin ’90), former violinist of the St. Lawrence String Quartet, join Curtis students Brendan Dooley, flute; Will Chow, cello; and Elena Perroni, soprano. An embodiment of the school’s “learn by doing” philosophy, Curtis on Tour offers students real-world, professional touring experience alongside celebrated alumni and faculty. In addition to performances, students frequently offer master classes, in-school demonstrations, and other community engagement activities. Since Curtis on Tour was established in 2008, students, faculty, and alumni have traveled to more than 50 destinations in Europe, Asia, and North and South America, with new venues added each year.
