Make Music This Summer—sign up by February 28

Curtis Summerfest offers special workshops for flute and double bass players and adult amateur chamber musicians, or a three-week residential program for high school–aged musicians. There’s a Summerfest program for you or someone you know! Sign up by February 28 at www.curtis.edu/Summerfest for the early registration rate.

Dover Quartet’s Residency Recital is March 6

Called “sublime” by the Strad, Curtis’s quartet in residence is making waves across the continent. Hear this prize-winning ensemble in a free recital on March 6, featuring quartets by Janácek and Mendelssohn. Curtis faculty member and violist Steven Tenenbom joins the Dovers for the String Quintet No. 1 by Brahms.

Curtis from Coast to Coast in March

A wind quintet of Curtis students tours with alumna pianist Di Wu (’05) to Costa Rica, Massachusetts, New Mexico, California, and Washington State from March 12 to 23. Their program embraces chamber music classics (Mozart, Poulenc) and three generations of Curtis composers (Barber, Higdon, Kramarchuk). See www.curtis.edu/CurtisOnTour for details. Meanwhile the Curtis 20/21 Ensemble debuts in Carnegie’s Zankel Hall in New York on March 20—and Curtis e-News readers receive a 50% discount on tickets ordered from Carnegie Hall (use promo code CTS19000). The all-Penderecki program, repeating in Philadelphia on March 22, will be led by the composer.

Beethoven Sonatas on CourseraSecond Chance!

Back by popular demand: Curtis faculty member Jonathan Biss’s five-week online course on the Beethoven piano sonatas starts March 13. Did you miss the debut last fall? Enroll and benefit from new assignments. And read in the Wall Street Journal how the course has transformed the teacher!

Overtones Advance Story

Curtis’s semiannual magazine Overtones comes out next month, with profiles of faculty, alumni, and students and news of Curtis events. For a taste of the upcoming issue, read reflections by Kensho Watanabe, Curtis’s first-ever conducting fellow, on working with his mentor conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
