Coming to Venice Theatre in January: two new acts and one perennial favorite

From surf rock to political humor to a perfect girls’ night out, there’s something for everyone

(Venice, FL) In addition to the plays that are running on Venice Theatre’s two stages, the always-busy venue will present three special events on its MainStage in January 2015. On Sunday and Monday, Jan. 11 and 12, Surf’s Up with Phil Dirt and the Dozers will pay tribute to the Beach Boys and other surf rock bands. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Sunday and 3 and 8 p.m. on Monday. Tickets are $35. This five-member beach party band has over 20 years of experience and will have audiences singing along to the music of The Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, The Hondells, Ronny and the Daytonas and more.

A week later on Sunday, Jan. 18 and Monday, Jan. 19, the Capitol Steps bring their up-to-the-minute political humor to Venice. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Sunday and 3 and 8 p.m. on Monday. Tickets are $49. Notorious for poking fun at Democrats and Republicans alike, the Capitol Steps have been around since 1981. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard four times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials. A long-time favorite of audiences and critics, the “Steps” have been described by The Wall Street Journal as, “a favorite on the Washington social circuit. Their political satire brings chuckles…rave reviews…guffaws…and bipartisan grins all around. Their satire hits the mark.”

“The Capitol Steps are what Washington would be like if everyone were funnier and could sing,” says humorist P.J. O’Rourke. Larry King calls them “the best,” adding, “There’s no one like them, no one in their league.” Even the United States Congress, House of Representatives highly recommends the Capitol Steps saying, “their performance was absolutely fantastic and truly a highlight of our affair.”

Closing out the month on Jan. 25 and 26 is Girls Night: The Musical, a show that has been entertaining audiences and earning raves from critics throughout North America since it began touring after its Off-Broadway debut. This touching and funny ‘tell-it-like-it-is’ musical takes audiences on a journey into the lives of a group of female friends; a journey accompanied by some of the biggest hits of the‘80s and ‘90s. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Sunday and 3 and 8 p.m. on Monday. Tickets are $35. Singing and dancing in the aisles is encouraged.
