Tenth anniversary season of Cleveland Orchestra Miami sponsored by White & Case

MIAMI – Cleveland Orchestra Miami begins its tenth anniversary season in November 2015 with the first of four weeks of performances by the ensemble that The New York Times has called “. . . the best orchestra in America.”  The Cleveland Orchestra’s concerts take place at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, the Orchestra’s home away from home for its unprecedented, ongoing Miami residency.  The 2015-16 season, sponsored by White & Case, includes concerts in November, January, and March.

Cleveland Orchestra Miami was launched in January 2007 during the Arsht Center’s inaugural 2006-07 season.  Under the auspices of a Miami-based board of directors, the annual residency serves Miami-Dade with an array of musical presentations by The Cleveland Orchestra, including a series of subscription concerts, education programs, and community engagement activities – touching the lives of more than 20,000 children, students, and adults each year.  Cleveland Orchestra Miami is supported through the generosity of music-lovers from across South Florida who believe in the power of great orchestral music for adults and young people alike.  Each season of Cleveland Orchestra Miami concerts is presented in partnership with the Arsht Center.

November 2015

The season starts with Cleveland Orchestra Miami Principal Guest Conductor Giancarlo Guerrero conducting concerts on November 13 and 14 with cellist Johannes Moser performing Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, which is considered one of the most difficult of all cello concertos and is one of the 20th century’s most popular.   Also on the program are Chávez’s Symphony No. 2 (“Sinfonia India”) and Saint-Saëns’s Symphony No 3 (“Organ Symphony”).

January 2016

Cleveland Orchestra Music Director Franz Welser-Möst conducts two weeks of concerts in Miami, beginning with January 21 and 22 performances featuring pianist Leif Ove Andsnes as soloist in the Schumann Piano Concerto, alongside Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy and Symphony No. 1 (“Winter Daydreams”). For performances on January 29 and 30, Cleveland Orchestra Concertmaster William Preucil and Principal Cello Mark Kosower take solo turns in Brahms’s Double Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra on a program that includes Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 3 and his Divertissement.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary season of Cleveland Orchestra Miami, on January 23 Franz Welser-Möst leads a gala concert featuring soprano Renée Fleming.  This performance will raise funds to continue Cleveland Orchestra Miami’s ongoing commitment to delivering world-class orchestral performances, community programming, and education partnerships, in addition to honoring the Founders of Cleveland Orchestra Miami and celebrating Miami and the Miami community for its extraordinary support.

March 2016

Cleveland Orchestra Miami’s 2015-16 season concludes with performances on March 17, 18, and 19 that feature the world premiere of a new work by Avner Dorman commissioned for The Cleveland Orchestra by the Adrienne Arsht Center to celebrate the organizations’ ten-year partnership.  Dorman’s work will celebrate the diverse influences that comprise Miami’s musical landscape.  A native of Israel living in the United States, Dorman has written music described by The Washington Post as “… sophisticated enough to appeal to an audience of classical aficionados, and approachable enough to appeal to people who have never been to an orchestra concert.”  Also on the program is Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 (“Titan”), and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet performs Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

Community Engagement and Education Activities
The Cleveland Orchestra’s associate conductor, Brett Mitchell, returns to Miami to lead two daytime Education Concert performances for elementary students of a program titled Beethoven Lives Upstairs on November 12 , at the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall.  This presentation, which launched the Orchestra’s music education collaboration with the Miami-Dade County Public School District during the first season of Cleveland Orchestra Miami, will feature Classical Kids Live! and The Cleveland Orchestra in a concert that seamlessly weaves the story of Beethoven’s life with performances of more than 20 of the composer’s most beloved works.  In addition to Education Concerts, Cleveland Orchestra musicians will participate in Music Explorer programs for children in Pre-K to Grade 1; Learning Through Music curriculum-linked programs for Grades 2-5; and coachings for advanced instrumental youth ensembles.   All education activities are presented by Cleveland Orchestra Miami and the Arsht Center.
