This performance marks the second Celebrity Series of Boston appearance for Ian Bostridge and the Celebrity Series debut of Thomas Adès.

A 13-time Grammy nominee, one of the world’s leading tenors and an unparalleled recitalist, Ian Bostridge stands at the peak of his powers. Bostridge is also the author of Schubert’s Winter Journey, Anatomy of an Obsession, an insightful and gracefully written work on Winterreise that positions Bostridge as a leading authority on the work. Pianist Thomas Adès is renowned for his brilliant compositions as much as his stellar performances. The duo will perform one of Schubert’s most enduring and haunting works, the 24-song cycle Winterreise.

Tenor Ian Bostridge’s international recital career has taken him to stages around the world, and he has held artistic residencies at the Vienna Konzerthaus and Schwarzenberg Schubertiade, a Carte-Blanche series with Thomas Quasthoff at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, a Perspectives series at Carnegie Hall, the Barbican, London, the Luxembourg Philharmonie, the Wigmore Hall and Hamburg Laeiszhalle.

He has worked with the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras, and has sung the world premiere of Henze’s ‘Opfergang’ with the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome under Antonio Pappano. His operatic appearances have taken him to Opera Australia, the Vienna State Opera, and the English National Opera, among others, for roles including Lysander in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Don Ottavio in “Don Giovanni,” and Tom Rakewell in “The Rake’s Progress.”

His recordings have won all the major international record prizes and been nominated for 13 Grammys. They include Schubert’s ‘Die schöne Müllerin’ with Graham Johnson (Gramophone Award 1996); Tom Rakewell with Sir John Eliot Gardiner (Grammy Award, 1999); and Belmonte with William Christie. Under his exclusive contract with Warner Classics recordings included Schubert Lieder and Schumann Lieder (Gramophone Award 1998), English song and Henze Lieder with Julius Drake, Britten’s ‘Our Hunting Fathers’ with Daniel Harding, ‘Idomeneo’ with Sir Charles Mackerras, Janacek with Thomas Adès, Schubert with Leif Ove Andsnes, Mitsuko Uchida and Antonio Pappano, Noel Coward with Jeffrey Tate, Britten Orchestral cycles with the Berlin Philharmonic  and Sir Simon Rattle, Wolf with Pappano, Bach cantatas with Fabio Biondi, Handel arias with Harry Bicket, Britten’s Canticles and both Britten’s ‘The Turn of the Screw’ (Gramophone Award, 2003) and ‘Billy Budd’  (Grammy Award, 2010), Adès’s ‘The Tempest’ (Gramophone Award 2010) and Monteverdi’s “Orfeo”.  Recent recordings include Britten songs with Antonio Pappano, and Schubert songs with Julius Drake.

Performances during the 2013 Britten anniversary celebrations included War Requiem with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski; Les Illuminations with the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Andris Nelsons; and Madwoman (‘Curlew River’) in the Netia Jones staging for the Barbican, which was also seen in New York and on the west coast of America. In the autumn of 2014 he embarked on a European tour of ‘Winterreise’ with Thomas Adès to coincide with the publication of his book ‘Schubert’s Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession’.

Ian Bostridge was a fellow in history at Corpus Christi College, Oxford (1992-5) and in 2001 was elected an honorary fellow of that college. In 2003 he was made an Honorary Doctor of Music by the University of St Andrew’s and in 2010 he was made an honorary fellow of St John’s College Oxford.  He was made a CBE in the 2004 New Year’s Honours. In 2014 he was Humanitas Professor of Classical Music at the University of Oxford.

Thomas Adès was born in London in 1971. His compositions include two operas, Powder Her Face and The Tempest. His orchestral works include AsylaTevotPolaris, Violin Concerto Concentric PathsIn Seven, and Totentanz for mezzo-soprano, baritone, and orchestra. His chamber works include the string quartets Arcadiana and The Four QuartersPiano Quintet, and Lieux retrouvés for cello and piano. Solo piano works include Darknesse VisibleTraced Overhead, and Three Mazurkas. Choral works include The Fayrfax Carol, America: a Prophecy, and January Writ.  In 2016 his new opera The Exterminating Angel received its world premiere at the Salzburg Festival.

From 1999 to 2008 Thomas was Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh Festival. As a conductor Thomas appears regularly with, among others, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw, Melbourne and Sydney Symphonies, BBC Symphony, and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. In opera, he has conducted Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress at the Royal Opera House, London, and Zürich Opera and The Tempest at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2015 with the Vienna Philharmonic, conducting The Tempest. Future plans include Totentanz with the Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Concertgebouworkest, Amsterdam.

His many awards include the Grawemeyer Award for Asyla (1999); Royal Philharmonic Society large-scale composition awards for AsylaThe Tempest, and Tevot; the Ernst von Siemens Composers’ Prize for Arcadiana; and the British Composer Award for The Four Quarters.  His CD recording of The Tempest from the Royal Opera House (EMI) won the Contemporary category of the 2010 Gramophone Awards; and his DVD of the production from the Metropolitan Opera was awarded the Diapason d’Or de l’année (2013), Best Opera recording (2014 Grammy Awards), and Music DVD Recording of the Year (2014 ECHO Klassik Awards).  In 2015 he was awarded the prestigious Léonie Sonning Music Prize. He was announced at the Boston Symphony’s first Artistic Partner for 2016-2019. He coaches Piano and Chamber Music annually at the International Musicians Seminar, Prussia Cove.
