This performance marks the Celebrity Series debut for both Mavis Staples and Joan Osborne.

Grammy Award-winning legend Mavis Staples teams up with multi-platinum recording artist Joan Osborne on the highly anticipated national tour, Solid Soul. From her early days with the iconic Staple Singers, when she was on top of the charts with songs like the 1972 #1 hit I’ll Take You There, to her recent albums with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Mavis Staples has been a leader in American music for six decades. The Solid Soul tour marks her first tour collaboration with Joan Osborne, the widely celebrated singer-songwriter who dominated Top 40 radio with her hit song One of Us and whose albums have garnered seven Grammy nominations.

Mavis Staples achieved wide recognition as lead singer for the Staple Singers. Her first solo self-titled album was released in 1969, and seven more albums followed. In 1996 she issued Spirituals & Gospel: Dedicated to Mahalia Jackson. She collaborated with Bob Dylan in 2003 for their duet on “Gotta Change My Way of Thinking” from the album Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan, with whom she was nominated for a 2003 Grammy Award in the “Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals” category. Her next recording project was in 2004 with Have a Little Faith. We’ll Never Turn Back was released three years later in 2007. Staples teamed up with Jeff Tweedy as producer for 2010’s You Are Not Alone, which won the 2011 Grammy Award in the category of Best Americana Album. One True Vine, released in 2013, was also produced by Tweedy and featured a mix songs written by the likes of George Clinton, Alan Sparhawk (Low), and Nick Lowe. Staples and Tweedy completed the final studio sessions of Pops Staples, released in 2015 as Don’t Lose This. Later that year, she released Your Good Fortune, a four-track EP made with labelmate Son Little.

Singer Joan Osborne is a singer-songwriter of note with seven Grammy nominations under her belt. She formed her own label, Womanly Hips, which resulted in releases such as 1992’s Soul Show. Osborne then decided to sign with Mercury, who released Relish 1995. The track One of Us became a hit and stayed at the number one spot on the U.S. charts for two weeks.

She has studied briefly with late Qawwali master Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and performed alongside such artists as Stevie Wonder, Melissa Etheridge, Taj Mahal, Luciano Pavarotti, Spearhead, Bob Dylan, and the Chieftains. Her album Righteous Love was released in 2000, How Sweet It Is in 2002, a career retrospective, One of Us, in 2005, Pretty Little Stranger in 2006, Breakfast in Bed in 2007, and in 2008 Little Wild One. Osborne and her co-producer Jack Petruzzelli created a classic blues and R&B cover album entitled Bring It on Home in 2012. Her most recent recording is Love & Hate (2014), in which she wrote or co-wrote every song.

Program to be announced from stage.
