CALIFORNIA BREED’s self-titled debut is garnering solid early reviews. Check out a sampling of the critical reaction here:
“California Breed eclipses anything Black Country Communion mustered in their short existence. ‘The Way’ and ‘Chemical Rain’ pack bombastic, swaggering Led Zep-meets-Audioslave riffs, ‘Spit You Out’ is straight-up good time rock ‘n’ roll and ‘All Falls Down’ is a decent stab at the token power-charged ballad. Watt’s undoubted spark has pulled these two seasoned vets out of a rut…”
–Rich Chamberlain, TOTAL GUITAR, May 2014
“California Breed is a raw, fiery rock cocktail that marries belligerent attitude with heartfelt emotion, delicate touch with super confident strut. First single ‘Sweet Tea’ is irresistible, hard hitting rock swagger, while closing number ‘Breathe’ is an uplifting, soulful hymn of understated groove that highlights Glenn’s evergreen vocal talents.”
–Chris Kee, POWERPLAY MAGAZINE, May 2014
“California Breed are another supergroup of sorts, but this time they’re a power trio, with new guitar sensation 23-year old Andrew Watt threatening to become the most talked about axe slinger since Charlie Sexton burst onto the scene. Like Sexton, Watt is a Bowie-phile. In fact he came to Hugh’s attention via a hair-raising stint at a New York City ‘Bowie Ball.’ Hughes’s monstrous pipes and super funk bass thwack are a given, as is Jason Bonham’s percussive assault, yet even these seasoned campaigners must be rubbing their eyes in disbelief at what the prodigy achieves.”
–Max Bell, CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINE, May 2014
“California Breed’s debut highlights the best of all three virtuosos without overstating the obvious. Because in the end, it really is all about the groove.”
–James Wood, GUITAR WORLD, May 2014
“…muscular yet funky riffage….this debut album gets the fist pumping and the heart righteously racing.”
—GUITAR & BASS, May 2014
“…blustery heavy rock…”
—Q, (4 out of 5 stars), May 2014
“There are some classics among the twelve songs presented here, with the moody ‘Chemical Rain’ leading the way. A gigantic groove burst forth as Hughes sings a killer melody and his performance is lively. The chorus is classic with Hughes expanding his range and blends it with a Beatle influenced chord progression. ‘The Way,’ ‘Sweet Tea’ and ‘The Grey’ all push the tempo and all capture the band slamming. Bonham’s performance elevates the material with his huge tom work and complex fills. These tracks are straight up rock ‘n’ roll and find the band executing it like the experts they are.”
–Dan Drago, ABOUT.COM “Heavy Metal” (4 out of 5 stars) May 14, 2014
“This is a powerhouse of a band sounding like they are ready to conquer the world, so come taste the California Breed brothers and sisters-trust me they are divine!”
—UBER ROCK (UK), May 2014
“Combining influences that span three generations, the self-titled California Breed is a heavy amalgamation of Hughes’ soaring vocals, Bonham’s imitable finesse behind a drum kit and Watt’s intuitive, modern swagger on the guitar and songwriting abilities. Julian Lennon introduced Hughes to Watt, and, despite the 40 year gap between the two, they apparently spoke the same musical language. Together with Bonham, they’ve churned out a rigid collection of 13 songs, sparse of hot-shot leads and speedy intervals in favor of rusty-blade power chords and layer upon layer of riffery resourcefulness. There’s a pervasive 70s influence throughout, alongside the grungy feel of the 90s (think Pearl Jam meets Led Zeppelin) that lifts the music from the doldrums of recycled retro rock moldy oldies.”
–Shawn Perry, VINTAGE ROCK, May 2014
“Amazing how close this power package comes to the original Zeppelin sound…great noise…”
—STEREOPLAY (Germany), May 2014
“…one extremely exciting, yet original Rock`n`Roll record.”
—CLASSIC ROCK (Germany), May 2014
“Instant and immediately likeable, California Breed is retro tinged modern rock at its absolute finest. Looking backwards to the classics–Led Zeppelin, Cream, Hendrix–whilst also very modern thinking, and boasting superb performances and production, California Breed pretty much sets the new benchmark for a rock ‘n’ roll record. Opener ‘The Way’ literally leaps from the speakers–as a statement of intent it is pure sorcery: seductive and addictive. First single ‘Sweat Tea’ is almost alarmingly good, reaching one arm deep into the Zep playbook whilst remaining firmly NOW. The rest of the album follows in similar style – enormous riffs, huge drums, fantastic playing, and Hughes’ incomparable voice. If it sounds like I am drooling over this album–I AM, and it is completely justified. ‘Invisible,’ ‘Spit You Out,’ ‘Midnight Oil’ all strike pay dirt immediately, but we could name any of these 13 tracks as standouts.”

About CALIFORNIA BREED:
Glenn Hughes has spent the subsequent years working with the biggest legends in music, as a solo star, and guesting with everyone from Black Sabbath to Earth, Wind & Fire – up to his most recent collaboration in rock supergroup Black Country Communion, which included Jason Bonham. When Black Country Communion disbanded Hughes and Bonham had a strong desire to keep playing together. They’re only challenge was finding a new guitarist worthy of their musicality. Easier said than done for these stars who between them have worked with some of the greatest guitarists in history – including Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page and Joe Bonamassa, to name just a few. Then fate took a hand in things when Glenn’s friend Julian Lennon introduced him to the astounding talents of a New York City hotshot guitarist named Andrew Watt. “Literally, the first day me and Andrew got together we wrote two songs,” recalls Glenn. “One was ‘Chemical Rain’ and the other was ‘Solo’, both of which are now on the finished album. I was so moved by the music, I said, ‘We’ve got to record this!’ That’s when I called Jason.” Cut to autumn 2013. Recording with Dave Cobb at the producer’s own studio in Nashville, added all the finishing touches, says Glenn. At Cobb’s insistence, every vocal was recorded live as the band was playing. “Totally the reverse of what I’m used to,” says Glenn. “But I went into that aggressive rock soulfulness and everything down to the whispers, it was all done live! I enjoyed myself so much, just going for it. For what is on paper a three-piece, the sheer range of sounds and melodies you get from California Breed are breathtaking.
