The Brooklyn Museum will present a variety of programs for adults, teens, and kids in July. Public programs include talks, nighttime events, performances, screenings, and hands-on workshops for children and adults that amplify the Museum’s exhibitions and permanent collection, serve its diverse public, and support learning through the visual arts.

Highlights include a special Art Off the Wall evening of music, dance, and conversation celebrating The Rise of Sneaker Culture, co-presented by Obsessive Sneaker Disorder; a film screening and discussion with Charlie Ahearn, director of Wild Style; and a special DJ set with Grammy Award-winning music producer and recording artist Swizz Beatz in celebration of FAILE: Savage/Sacred Young Minds.

Art Off the Wall: The Rise of Sneaker Culture

Art Off the Wall is a series featuring site-specific performances inspired by exhibitions on view. The Thursday evening program continues with an evening inspired by The Rise of Sneaker Culture including a sneaker drive; a conversation honoring women sneaker collectors, designers, and media makers hosted by Obsessive Sneaker Disorder; live break dancing; and a dance party hosted by I Love Vinyl. Discussion participants include Susan Boyle, owner of RIME NYC Brooklyn Sneaker Boutique; Sole De Vida, sneaker collector and blogger; April Walker, owner/creator of Walker Wear, commonly regarded as the first urban fashion brand; and Sophia Chang,New York born-and-bred illustrator and designer.

Photography Workshop: “Politics, Portraiture, and Identity”

Artist Zanele Muholi uses photography and testimonials to create visibility for black lesbian and transgender communities in South Africa. In the spirit of Muholi’s work, Sherley Olopherne, photographer and archivist at the Lesbian Herstory Archives, leads a two-part photography workshop focusing on self-representation and personal narrative. Learn the basics of portrait photography and compile your photos and testimonials as a storytelling tool. Open to all; no experience necessary. All materials will be provided. Join us for a screening of Wild Style (Charlie Ahearn, 1983, 82 min.), after which the director talks about the experiences of artists living in New York City in the 1980s, including Jean-Michael Basquiat’s contemporaries.
