Heartstrings

(June 3rd, 2014; Birthday Records)

Bohemian rock’n’roll. With Howling Bells and their stunning new record entitled Heartstrings – out June 3rd via Birthday Records – that is the essence of what you will hear. Heartstrings, the quartet’s fourth album, was recorded/produced in London by Catherine J. Marks (Foals, PJ Harvey) with the legendary Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, The Killers, Depeche Mode). PRESS HERE to watch the music video for “Slowburn,” the album’s punchy, viscerally anthemic first single. PRESS HERE to watch the album preview now, directed by Giorgio Testi (The Rolling Stones, The Killers, Savages, The Kills).

Howling Bells – the globetrotting foursome that originated in Sydney and now call London and Berlin home – took a different approach with the recording of Heartstrings than with that of their previous albums, laying down one track a day for 11 days, resulting in a potent collection of songs and a concise blast of melodic power. The LP spans the piano-led chamber pop of “Paper Heart” and the MBV-go-Spector fuzz-tune landscapes of “Your Love” – and overall, positions front woman Juanita Stein’s honeyed vocals in “a really stark, cold dark place.”

Since the release of 2011’s The Loudest Engine, Juanita had her first child, resulting in the band’s longest break since Howling Bells formed a decade ago. While she was personally fulfilled by motherhood, Juanita and the rest of the band were chomping at the bit to create again musically. The band – which has performed alongside the likes of The Killers and Coldplay on arena tours – is eager to reconnect with audiences across the world. In short, Howling Bells need to feel those heartstrings being tugged.

Howling Bells are Juanita Stein (Vocals, Guitar), Joel Stein (Guitar), Glenn Moule (Drums) and Gary Daines (Bass).
