Bizet’s Carmen Returns to the Met September 30,

With Anita Rachvelishvili Reprising Her

Acclaimed Performance as the Gypsy Seductress

Bizet’s powerful drama of lust, seduction, and murder, Carmen, will return to the Met on September 30 for eight performances starring Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili, one of the world’s leading interpreters of the title character. The cast also includes Latvian tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko as Don José, the upstanding soldier whose life unravels because of his obsession with Carmen; Romanian soprano Anita Hartig as Micaëla, Don José’s virtuous fiancée; and Italian baritone Massimo Cavalletti as the swaggering toreador Escamillo. Rising Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, who made his Met debut last season, returns to conduct his first company performances of Bizet’s popular masterpiece. The production is by Richard Eyre, who also directs the Met’s season-opening new production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. The star of that staging, Russian bass-baritone Ildar Abdrazakov, will sing Escamillo in the October 28 and November 1 performances.
