The Beverly Hills Bar Association (BHBA), in conjunction with the Beverly Hills Bar Foundation, hosts the 62nd Annual Supreme Court Luncheon honoring the justices of the California Supreme Court on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, 11:30 am, at The Beverly Hilton.  All seven justices are slated to attend: Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, who makes extended remarks about the current state of the judiciary, and Associate Justices Ming W. Chin, Carol A. Corrigan, Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, Leondra R. Kruger, Goodwin H. Liu and Kathryn Mickle Werdegar.  The keynote speaker is Jackie Lacey, the first woman and first African-American to serve as Los Angeles District Attorney since the office was established in 1850.  More than 50 other judicial officers and other dignitaries are attending.  Scholarships are also being presented to seven economically disadvantaged, academically qualified, local law students involved in public service.  Judge Gilbert Manuel Lopez of the Los Angeles Superior Court, a graduate of Loyola Law School and former Bar Foundation scholarship recipient, is providing brief comments about the impact of the scholarship on his career. The BHBA’s annual Supreme Court Luncheon, a tradition that began in 1954, provides Southern California lawyers and jurists an opportunity to get together outside of the courtroom.

“The Beverly Hills Bar Association is pleased to recognize and honor California’s Supreme Court Justices for their tremendous dedication and outstanding service to the State,” says BHBA President Howard S Fredman.

Adds Beverly Hills Bar Foundation President Jim Jahant, “We are also proud to support deserving law school students though the Foundation’s scholarship and Rule of Law award programs.  These are truly accomplished young men and women who have already made a positive impact through their dedicated public service.”

Proceeds from the event benefit the Beverly Hills Bar Foundation scholarship program.  Scholarships are being presented to seven law school students: Krithika Santhanam of Loyola Law School; Lusik Gasparyan of Pepperdine University School of Law; Monique Moncayo and Lauren Fierro of Southwestern Law School; Anne Busacca-Ryan and Vivian T Wong of UCLA School of Law; and Stephanie Rector of USC Gould School of Law.  The Beverly Hill Bar Foundation also recognizes the three winners of its annual “Rule of Law Writing Competition” – Laura Alexander of UCLA School of Law won Grand Prize for her paper, “Rule of Law and The Media,” with Honorable Mentions going to Jena McCabe of Loyola Law School (“Can You Hear Me Now”), and Ricardo Lopez of the University of California Irvine School of Law (“Terminally Ill Minors”).

Scholarship Donors are Girardi Keese; Greenberg Traurig; and Greines, Martin, Stein & Richland LLP.  Champions of Justice Donors include Bird, Marella, Boxer, Wolpert, Nessim, Drooks, Lincenberg & Rhow, P.C.; Greenberg Glusker; Oldman, Cooley, Sallus, Birnberg & Coleman LLP; Shernoff Bidart Echeverria Bentley LLP; and Valensi Rose, PLC.  Press Reception Co-Sponsors are Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP; and Torrey Pines Bank.  The “Rule of Law Writing Competition” sponsor is Goodson Wachtel and Petrulis APC.

District Attorney Jackie Lacey has spent most of her professional life as a prosecutor, manager and executive in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. On Dec. 3, 2012, she was sworn in as the 42nd District Attorney.  Her top priority is keeping the streets of Los Angeles County safe from violent and dangerous criminals. She is committed to safeguarding our children from human sex traffickers, our seniors from financial elder abuse and our communities from environmental crimes that threaten our health and our livelihood.  District Attorney Lacey has worked with business leaders on how best to protect consumers from computer network intrusions that jeopardize our bank accounts and credit ratings. She also remains committed to prosecuting government officials who violate the public’s trust.  A Los Angeles native and graduate of the University of Southern California Law School, District Attorney Lacey leads a staff of roughly 1,000 lawyers, nearly 300 investigators and about 800 support staff employees.  Her office prosecuted more than 71,000 felonies and nearly 112,000 misdemeanors in 2014.

The Beverly Hills Bar Association, founded in 1931, is the fifth largest bar association in California, with nearly 6,000 members.  Its mission is to serve its members, to lead the legal profession and to advocate for justice in the community.
