BRADENTON, Fla. — Beat a path to good health at Beats @ Healthy Street, a free community health fair at the Bradenton Farmers’ Market, Saturday, April 8, 2017, 9 a.m.–2 p.m, in downtown Bradenton. Free health screenings, healthy cooking demonstrations, games, prizes, mini yoga and Zumba classes, are just a few activities offered. Exhibits covering a number of health topics will coincide with the observance of National Public Health Week.

The Beats @ Healthy Street health fair, sponsored by Tobacco Free Florida, an initiative of the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County, features more than a dozen exhibitors. Health topics and services will include blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, information regarding healthy living for children and teens, disease prevention, women’s health, WIC (a special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children), tobacco prevention and cessation, and more.

“The Farmers Market is the perfect venue for this event,” said Dr. Jennifer Bencie, Administrator for the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County. “The healthy cooking demonstrations and mini-exercise classes are great complements to the Market’s locally-grown produce and upbeat atmosphere. It’s all fun, fresh and informative!” Bencie continued.

The schedule of events includes:

  • 10 a.m.: Healthy Cooking Demonstration with Jayson Kupferman, Director of Food & Nutrition Services at Manatee Memorial Hospital (MMH). Sabrina Livshin, Clinical Nutrition Manager at MMH, will answer questions about healthy recipes and nutrition. Attendees will learn healthy cooking techniques and be able to sample the delicious, nutritious and healthy food.
  •  Hourly: Wheel of Fortune, the Healthy Edition, where attendees can spin a wheel and play for prizes.
  • Throughout the day: Free Zumba and other group exercise demonstrations by trained instructors.

Peg Haynes, Bradenton Farmers’ Market Manager, says there will be plenty of other events happening during the remainder of the market season, including the Children’s Book Fair on April 29, 2017. The third annual Children’s Book Fair and Family Fun Day, in partnership with Manatee County public libraries and ABC Artisans of Books for Children and Adults, will join the Farmers’ Market. Featuring more than a dozen local authors and illustrators of children’s books, storytelling, a scavenger hunt, and numerous other fun activities for kids.

“We also feature Mainly Art, an arts and crafts market that joins the Farmers’ Market on the third Saturday of each month, featuring the work of more than 20 local artisans, and live music. Fourth Avenue, adjacent to Old Main Street, is the location for numerous other special events at the market,” Haynes explained.
