Astoria, NY-March 5, 2015: Astoria Performing Arts Center (APAC) will host its annual Gala at the Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Avenue, Astoria NY,on Wednesday, April 1, 2015.  For their extraordinary service and support of the arts, APAC will be honoring Ted Chapin, President of Rodgers & Hammersteinand Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer. The evening will include a cocktail reception catered by Rest-Au-Rant, an opportunity to explore the museum, and a special performance directed by APAC Artistic Director Dev Bondarin. Tickets are currently on sale at apacny.org. APAC’s next show, the musical Merrily We Roll Along, book by George Furth and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and directed by Dev Bondarin will open at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church on May 2, 2015.

BIOGRAPHIES
Ted Chapin is president of Rodgers & Hammerstein, the organization that manages and controls the creative output of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.  Together, the two men changed the world of musical theater, starting with Oklahoma! and continuing through The Sound of Music. This season in New York, their work has been represented by Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella on Broadway, and Allegro at Classic Stage Company, which was also presented last season by APAC.This spring Lincoln Center Theater opens a new production of The King and I. The company also represents works by others, including all the work of Irving Berlin. Chapin sits on several boards, including New York City Center and Goodspeed Musicals. He was the chairman of the Encores! Advisory Committee from the inception of Encores! He ran The Musical Theatre Lab, was directorial or production assistant on the original Broadway productions of The Rothschilds, The Unknown Soldier and His Wife, The Sunshine Boys and Follies. His book, Everything Was Possible:The Birth of the Musical Follies, published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2003, won an ASCAP/Deems Taylor Award and a Special Jury Prize for Distinguished Achievement by the Theatre Library Association and is available from Applause BooksA lifelong resident of Western Queens, Jimmy Van Bramer has been a member of the New York City Council since 2009, and was elected Majority Leader in 2014. Council Member Van Bramer’s career has been devoted to making our community stronger and making life better for Queens families. He serves as chair of the Council’s Cultural Affairs, Libraries and International Intergroup Relations Committee. As Chair of the committee, he has direct oversight over 200 libraries and thousands of cultural organizations, institutions and programs throughout New York City. He has been a longtime fan and supporter of APAC.

ASTORIA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, INC. (APAC)a not-for-profit organization, was founded in 2001 by Sue Scannell (Founding Executive Director, 2001-2005) and Brian J. Swasey (Founding Artistic Director, 2001-2008), and is led by Artistic Director Dev Bondarin. APAC’s mission is to bring high quality theater to Astoria, Queens, and to support local youth and senior citizens.

 

On its mainstage, APAC produces revivals and premieres of plays and musicals, and APAC also develops new works through readings and workshops. Its flexible theater space changes with each production. To date, APAC has received 28 New York Innovative Theatre Award nominations and 6 wins (Allegro,Children of Eden, & Ragtime), as well as an Off-Off Broadway Theatre Review Award for Outstanding Production of a Musical (Is There Life After High School?). APAC was the recipient of the 2012 Caffe Cino Fellowship Award, under the leadership of Taryn Sacramone (Executive Director, 2005-2013) and Tom Wojtunik (Artistic Director, 2008-2014).

 

APAC offers free annual community programs, including a summer performance camp for children ages 8-13, an after school playwriting program for middle school students, and a performance program for Queens residents over the age of 60. These programs deepen ties with the community and develop new audiences for theater. Diverse programming and consistent quality attract a loyal and growing audience that reflects the diversity of Western Queens and also draws from the other boroughs and beyond.

In addition to its theater space within the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, APAC’s offices are located within the historic Kaufman Astoria Studios.
