Summer Season Debuts

Urbanite Theatre presents Dry Land

The first of Urbanite Theatre’s two-show summer season debuts have arrived! Dry Land is set in the girls’ locker room of a Florida high school. This portrait of an unlikely friendship follows Ester, a hopeful collegiate swimmer, and Amy, a girl in need of an ally. Traversing female sexuality, eating disorders, suicide, bullying, and the political landscape of reproductive rights in America, Dry Land is a brave portrayal of the contemporary American teenager and the impossible pressures that build up at the brink of adulthood.

Opening June 20th, an exhibition celebrating the Ringling College of Art and Design All Ringling Television Network (ART Network) will showcase the achievements of this five year-old student-driven organization, while also introducing visitors to the various elements of video production. This exhibition will demonstrate ART Network’s mission of offering immersive experiences while demystifying the process of digital content creation. Visitors will have the opportunity to view first-hand the driving energy of this groundbreaking creative network while also actively taking on the role of director, actor, and cinematographer through a number of activities.

Hermitage Beach Event

Hermitage Artist Retreat presents June Beach Event
June 24 at 7 p.m.
Program begins in the
Palm House – 6630 Manasota Key Rd., Englewood

The Hermitage Artist Retreat will hold a beach event featuring two visual artists and a writer. Painter and Mixed Media Artist Lorenzo Segovia and Painter, Sculptor and Greenfield Prize finalist Diana Al-Hadid will show and talk about their work. At approximately 8 p.m., the program moves to the beach, where Poet, Essayist and Professor Sheryl St. Germain will read from her work. Mother Nature’s sunset ends the program at 8:30 p.m. Visitors should bring their beach chairs or blankets, along with any refreshments to enjoy outside.

Opportunity Grant Workshop

Join the Arts and Cultural Alliance on June 27 at 11 a.m. in Venice at the Gulf Coast Community Foundation (601 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice, FL 34285), or on June 28 at 10 a.m. in Sarasota at the Center for Arts and Humanity (1226 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236) as we explain the guidelines of the State of the Arts Opportunity Grant.

The Arts and Cultural Alliance has established this grant program to provide assistance to Sarasota County nonprofit organizations for artistic projects. The funding for this grant is from the Florida Arts License Plates in Sarasota County and other funds. This Opportunity Grant is intended for organizations that do not qualify or did not receive the Tourist Development Cultural/Arts Grant. The program provides support for the organization’s projects that demonstrate artistic merit, community involvement and administrative competence.  It is expected that all programming within our arts and cultural community will help create an environment that is attractive to tourists and visitors from outside our county.

The John Ringling Towers Fund Individual Artist Award was designed to recognize practicing, professional, creative artists residing in Sarasota County through monetary fellowship awards. The program provides support for artists of exceptional talent and demonstrated ability to continue to produce work.  The John Ringling Towers Fund Individual Artist Award provides up to $5,000. The number of awards will vary according to the number of applications reviewed, the recommendations of the panel and the funds available.

The John Ringling Towers Fund Historic Preservation Award is given to nonprofit organizations or governmental agencies located in Sarasota County, to be used for historic rehabilitation, capital (bricks and mortar), preventive maintenance projects or national register designations. The program provides grants of up to $5,000 in recognition of historic preservation projects. The number of awards will vary according to the number of applications reviewed, the recommendations of the panel and the funds available.

Cover Contest!

The Arts and Cultural Alliace of Sarasota County has just announced its Arts and Culture Guide COVER Contest!

Local artists, including college and high school students, are invited to submit artwork representative of our vibrant arts and culture scene. The winning selection will be used as the cover of the Arts and Culture Guide. Over 40,000 copies of the guide will be distributed throughout the community in early October. There is extensive recognition for the winning artist from SCENE Magazine as well as the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County.

Opportunity: Become a
Patriot Plaza Guide!

The Arts and Cultural Alliance will provide two six-hour training sessions for individuals in our community who would like to become guides for Patriot Plaza at the Sarasota National Cemetery. The tours given by the guides provide details about the beautiful amphitheater and five large public artworks. The art includes brass sculptures, a mosaic mural, etched glass, marble tablets and plinths, and documentary photographs.

The themes of Patriot Plaza are: Honor Service, Inspire Patriotism, and Embrace Freedom. The training sessions will take place as needed. In addition to the training sessions, guides are also expected to spend additional time on their own learning about the artworks, shadowing current tours, and perfecting tour presentations for adults and students.
