Naples, FL—CEO and President Kathleen van Bergen and Music Director Andrey Boreyko today announced the new season for Artis—Naples, the Naples Philharmonic and The Baker Museum. Boreyko enters his second season as Music Director of Artis—Naples in a season that features bold masterworks, new compositions and internationally recognized guest artists—all in collaboration with the Naples Philharmonic. The Baker Museum season is highlighted by a blockbuster fashion exhibition from The Museum at FIT and Naples Collects, an exploration of the community’s private collections.

“We will continue to explore a broad spectrum of music from classical hallmarks to contemporary commissioned works,” Boreyko said. “Artis—Naples and the Naples Philharmonic are poised to make fascinating connections between the performing and visual arts, through our continued dedication to multidisciplinary programming.”

Artis—Naples has also announced a three-year residency with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which will include six performances along with community partnerships and educational efforts by the orchestra beginning in the 2015-16 season. The residency will bring the venerated orchestra to Florida for the first time on March 1 and 2, 2016.

“Sharing the impeccable musicianship of this celebrated ensemble with our community is one of the greatest partnerships we’ve established for Artis—Naples,” van Bergen said. “It’s a rare opportunity and one that will have lasting impact on our cultural community.”

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra with conductor Peter Oundjian and The Cleveland Orchestra, under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst will also perform in Hayes Hall in 2015-16 as part of the Visiting Orchestras Series.

Lauded guest artists perform Beethoven, Brahms and new works in both large and intimate settings

The season begins with seven-time Grammy-winning pianist Emanuel Ax performing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 on October 22 and 24. Conducted by Boreyko, the orchestra will also perform Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra. The November Masterworks concert presents another American piano great—André Watts—performing Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto with Matthew Halls conducting. Among the other classical touchstones on the schedule, Boreyko conducts Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in February and January, respectively. The season rounds out with a performance of Beethoven’s powerhouse Fifth Symphony in May.

The Miró Quartet comes to Hayes Hall in December to perform Kevin Puts’ How Wild the Sea, a piece co-commissioned by the Naples Philharmonic. Branford Marsalis returns to Hayes Hall for the world premiere of Gabriel Prokofiev’s Saxophone Concerto in the same concert the orchestra performs Prokofiev’s famous grandfather Sergei’s Romeo and Juliet Suite. Percussion superstar Colin Currie performs Tan Dun’s Water Concerto in a concert that also features Mahler’s “Titan” symphony.

Several of the artists, including the Miró Quartet, Currie and pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, will also perform as part of the Wang and Sypert chamber music series while in Naples, offering multiple ways for audiences to interact with these musicians. Famed pianist Christopher O’Riley will perform as part of the Wang Series and record an episode of his NPR series From the Top live in Hayes Hall.

“We are truly honored to have relationships with brilliant artists of today,” van Bergen said. “Both established artists and emerging artists will find a warm welcome from our audiences.”

Collections from The Museum at FIT and Naples residents highlight museum season

From November 9 to March 7, 2016, The Baker Museum presents The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s exhibition Yves Saint Laurent + Halston: Fashioning the ’70s. Currently on display in New York City, the show delves into the groundbreaking work of these two seminal designers, drawn from The Museum at FIT’s extensive collection. From January 30 to June 30, 2016, Naples Collects will feature the world-class art that graces the walls of private homes in our community. This eclectic exhibition brings together examples of high-quality art by some of the best-known American artists of the 20th century, along with centuries of masterful work from Europe and Latin America.

“These two very different shows offer our patrons a way to explore art in its many different forms,” said Frank Verpoorten, the museum’s director and chief curator. “Halston and Yves Saint Laurent brought high-art concepts to the world of fashion through texture, color and construction. Naples Collects allows a rare opportunity for the general public to see inside some of the best art collections in our region.”

As a companion to Naples Collects, the museum will also display a selection from its permanent collection entitled Celebrating 15 Years of Collecting at The Baker Museum. This exhibition of work from the museum’s permanent collection will highlight the most significant collections gifted to the museum in its 15-year trajectory. This show includes work by Josef Albers, A.E. Gallatin, Rosalind Bengelsdorf Browne, Alexander Calder, Gertrude Greene, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Thomas Hart Benton, Will Barnet, Suzy Frelinghuysen, George L.K. Morris, Jackson Pollock and Charles Sheeler, among other seminal figures in modern art.

Timeless Sinatra and Classic FM radio headline the Pops series

Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly enters his seventh season with the Naples Philharmonic with an exciting lineup that celebrates Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday, the joys of classic FM radio and the best in movie music. Everly’s new Sinatra concert, with fresh orchestration and classic crooning, brings the leader of the Rat Pack back to life, along with his catalog of unforgettable music.

Classic FM highlights some of rock and pop music’s biggest hits from ABBA to Let it Go in a decades-spanning retrospective. Musical polymaths Time for Three join the orchestra for a concert that draws equally from Bach and the Beatles, from Vivaldi and U2. Fan-favorite conductor Stuart Chafetz returns to conduct the orchestra in a salute to Hollywood that takes the audience from Gone with the Wind to Pirates of the Caribbean.

Popular dance, jazz, adult education and youth programs serve the community

Artis—Naples continues its partnership with the celebrated Miami City Ballet presenting two performances, including the Jerome Robbins/Leonard Bernstein collaboration Fancy Free and the 2012 Justin Peck/Sufjan Stevens work Year of the Rabbit. The Joffrey Ballet and Paul Taylor Dance Company will complete the four-performance series.

The Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra returns for another season of Wednesday night concerts featuring acclaimed jazz players. With members of the Naples Philharmonic and local jazz standouts comprising a jazz sextet, this concert series continues to be a popular exploration of this quintessential American art form.

For the 26th season, Artis—Naples presents its continuing education series, Lifelong Learning, with popular programs on film, music, movies, art and literature. Encompassing more than 150 lectures, film screenings, moderated discussions and hands-on workshops, Lifelong Learning invites participants to explore the arts in-depth and discover their creative potential. An additional study group focusing on Chinese art and history has been added to the curriculum for the 2015-16 season.

Artis—Naples also continues its strong commitment to inspire local youth with myriad programs and activities geared toward children of all ages. From three youth-music ensembles to on-campus art classes to chamber music at area schools, Artis—Naples’ educational programming serves 46,000 students annually. It is the largest program of its kind in Southwest Florida.

“Our mission is to increase arts appreciation in our community, from beginning students to experts,” says David Filner, Vice President, Artistic Operations. “Through our performances and our educational programming, we are building and deepening lifelong relationships with the arts.”
