Greenfield Prize Takes Center Stage

corner

—————————SPONSORED CONTENT—————————

The Greenfield Prize was born on April 23, 2008 – at lunch withBob and Louise Greenfield and Debra Jacobs who, at the time, was the administrator of the Greenfield Foundation. The conversation centered around a major relationship between theHermitage Artists Retreat and the Foundation, which eventually became a contract to develop and administer a national prize in the form of a commission for a new work of art in drama, music, and visual art.

Working closely with Bob Greenfield, the Hermitage Artist Retreat developed the concept, a jury selection system, a celebration dinner with a major national speaker, and they dreamed of the future when work the Hermitage commissioned would find its first audiences in collaboration with regional professional arts organizations. And perhaps those annual premieres would coordinate with each new award to create a Greenfield Prize Weekend.

Well that future is here.  On April 10, the Hermitage will premiere the 2012 Greenfield Prize commission by pianist/composer Vijay Iyer during the La Musica Chamber Music Festival. On Saturday April 12, the Hermitage will be awarding the 7th Greenfield Prize to playwright Nilo Cruz. Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis will give the keynote speech. It will be a weekend filled with events, including free creative conversations with our super stars.

Grapes of Wrath

Asolo Repertory Theatre continues its 2013-2014 season withFrank Galati’s triumphant adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel THE GRAPES OF WRATH, directed by Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards

Frank Galati’s adaptation premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre of Chicago in 1988. The Broadway production won the Tony award for Best Play and Best Direction of a Play in 1990 and was nominated for six additional Tony Awards. The play opens tonight, Friday, March 14 and will run through April 19.

The Grapes of Wrath is a great work of art. The Joad family’s story of survival is uplifting and universal. For me, there are few plays that touch every aspect of what it is to be human, and this is one of them. The set, featuring a recreation of the Colorado River, onstage rain, and the iconic moving jalopy, is a visual masterpiece that vividly complements this extraordinary story of what it means to be an American,” said Edwards.

Freud and Lewis Face-Off at FST

Freud

Florida Studio Theatre will present the new play, Freud’s Last Session by Mark St. Germain, as part of a limited engagement run.

Freud’s Last Session presents an imagined depiction of a meeting between Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis, set in the final days of Freud’s life, on the very day that England entered the Second World War. The play is inspired by Dr. Armand M. Nicholi Jr.’s book The Question of God, which speculates on the meeting between Freud and Lewis that history can neither confirm nor deny. St. Germain’s play takes the scenario one step farther, bringing the imagined meeting to life in exquisite, thought-provoking detail. In a meeting of the minds unlike any other, the intellectual pair faces off over the existence of God and a variety of other topics.
