“An Evening with Stephen Flatow”

Tuesday, February 9, Temple Emanu-El

A New Jersey father’s quest for justice after his daughter is murdered by a suicide bomber sets off a chain of events that led American prosecutors to accuse some of the world’s biggest banks of transferring money for nations like Iran.

(Sarasota-Manatee) Stephen Flatow has a story to tell—standing up to the greatest powers and not blinking. He has challenged the State Department, the Justice Department, the courts, and the largest banks in the world. He has failed and prevailed, stumbled and triumphed, over and over again. He does not quit. He is driven by the love of his daughter, Alisa Flatow, who was killed by an Iranian-sponsored Palestinian terrorist group in Israel in 1995, when she was 21 years old. Flatow will be speaking about his experience in “An Evening With Stephen Flatow,” Tuesday, February 9, 7:30 p.m., at Temple Emanu-el, 151 McIntosh Road in Sarasota. Advance tickets are $10; $18 at the door. Students are free with I.D. There is a $50 dessert reception with Mr. Flatow at 6:30 p.m. This event is co-sponsored by The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee; all proceeds will be donated to the Jewish Agency’s Victims of Terror Fund. To purchase tickets, visit jfedsrq.org or contact 941-552-6304.

Flatow is an American lawyer notable for initiating a series of lawsuits targeting the Islamic Republic of Iran and several international banks who processed transactions on Iran’s behalf, which were linked to terrorist activities. His daughter Alisa Flatow was killed in a suicide bombing attack on a bus carried out by terrorists near Kfar Darom, Israel, in 1995.

After Alisa’s death, Flatow commenced a series of lawsuits against the government of Iran. An amendment to the US Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act of 1976, which enabled Flatow to successfully sue Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism, is named after him (“The Flatow Amendment”). Beginning in 2006, he has helped the United States government identify parties illegally processing financial transactions for Iran. He has also written op-eds on issues related to terrorism for a number of newspapers.
