Amarillo Symphony Presents Trailblazers in Honor of Clyde Roller

Trailblazers features one of America’s most sought after young musicians, Gabriel Cabezas

AMARILLO, TEXAS – (March 12, 2015) – The Amarillo Symphony, (www.amarillosymphony.org), the leader of orchestral music in the Texas Panhandle since 1924, today announces details regarding its upcoming concert series on March 27 and 28 at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts in Amarillo.

The talented Gabriel Cabezas joins the Amarillo Symphony to perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, Opus 33. “An intense player who connects to music naturally, without artifice, and brings a singing line to the cell” (The Oregonian), Gabriel Cabezas is one of America’s most sought after young musicians. Combining a superb technique, intellectual curiosity and a pioneering musical spirit, Cabezas is at home in front of an orchestra, performing with singer-songwriter or sharing the stage with a dance troupe. What drives him is the delight of artistic collaboration, the need for genuine communication with audiences and the search for new musical experiences.

“Gabriel Cabezas joins the orchestra to perform one of the popular works that Tchaikovsky wrote for the cello, Variations on a Rococo Theme, Opus 33,” said Jacomo Rafael Bairos, music director and conductor of the Amarillo Symphony. “Gabriel has appeared as a soloist with America’s finest orchestras and we are thrilled to have him as a part of this tribute concert for Clyde Roller. You don’t want to miss this exciting concert that will remind us all about why the Amarillo Symphony is a strong part of the Amarillo community.”

Jacomo Rafael Bairos has programmed this tribute concert for one of his musical heros, Clyde Roller. Jacomo performed under the baton of Clyde Roller when he attended Interlochen Center for the Arts.

Dr. Clyde Roller conducted the Amarillo Symphony for 14 years and is credited along with beloved Eddie Melin for literally saving the Amarillo Symphony from disbanding in 1941. The Amarillo Symphony will also perform Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, John Murphy’s Adagio in D Minor Premiere and Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Each of the selections performed in this concert was a Clyde Roller favorite.

“The Trailblazers concerts are dedicated to the man who gave so much of his life and energy to make great art vital and to keep our hometown jewel, the Amarillo Symphony thriving,” said Jacomo Rafael Bairos, “Clyde Roller was an educator and inspiration for me. His work with the World Youth Symphony Orchestra in which I performed at Interlochen and where I first discovered my passion for orchestral music was seminal in my development as a young high school student.”

The Trailblazers concert series will be held at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28 at 8:00 pm. For more information about Trailblazers or to purchase tickets, please visit www.amarillosymphony.org or call 806-376-8782.
