Acclaimed Environmental Artist opens his studio to visitors for the 90N exhibition
Xavier Cortada invites the public to his studio at the historic Whilden-Carrier Cottage in Pinecrest Gardens for a special exhibition of 90N Artic Ice Paintings
Pinecrest, FL90N was created by acclaimed artist Xavier Cortada more than a decade ago as a symbolic nod to the melting polar caps. The relevance of this exhibition is significant to the artist who known for making poignant art that addresses environmental and societal issues worldwide that include child welfare, AIDS and global climate change.

As a precursor to his upcoming Village-wide art installation titled Underwater HOA which highlights sea level rise, Mr. Cortada invites the public to view the original Artic Ice Paintings that make up 90N. The exhibition is Sunday, October 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the artist’s studio located in the historic Whilden-Carrier Cottage, 11000 Red Road.

In 2008, Mr. Cortada arrived at the North Pole (90N) to create ritualistic installations addressing global climate change and the melting polar caps. At the end of the trip, he created 90N by taping pieces of paper to the top deck of the icebreaker he was traveling in. He then placed North Pole sea ice and paint on the pieces of paper. As the icebreaker made its way south from 90 degrees North, the ice melted and created his Arctic ice paintings.

“I want to bring attention to the alarming connection between the Arctic and the Florida peninsula,” said Mr. Cortada. “Melting ice will lead to sea level rise, more coastal flooding, prolonged heat waves, relentless rain, stalled tropical storms, extreme weather and more intense fire seasons.”
