ACCLAIMED CANADIAN ARTISTS BRING WINNERS AND LOSERS TO WOOLLY MAMMOTH THEATRE COMPANY

FOLLOWING SUCCESSFUL ENGAGEMENTS INCLUDING A RUN AT NEW YORK’S SOHO REP, INNOVATIVE TWO-MAN SHOW COMES TO WASHINGTON, DC

(Washington, DC) Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, in association with Theatre Replacement, Neworld Theatre and Crow’s Theatre of Canada, is pleased to announce that Canadian theatre artists James Long and Marcus Youssef will bring Winners and Losers to DC this fall. Since its premiere in December 2012 at British Columbia’s Gateway Theatre, the show has enjoyed successful performances at international venues and festivals including Denmark’s Aarhus Festival and the INTERsection festival in Terni, Italy. Winners and Losers runs at Woolly from October 26 to November 22, 2015.
Winners and Losers is the brainchild of Vancouver-based theatre artists and longtime collaborators Marcus Youssef and James Long. As the play begins, Marcus and Jamie entertain themselves with a simple, seemingly harmless game – they pick a subject and debate whether it’s a winner or a loser. But what begins as a playful exercise slowly reveals itself as an unpacking of privilege, status symbols, and class divisions in an innovative autobiographical format. In praise of the show’s run at New York’s Soho Rep, The New York Times called it “a frisky theatrical symposium…articulate, funny and breezily charming” and the Village Voice dubbed it, “a sly, utterly successful production” that “hits the bull’s-eye.”

“I’m thrilled to welcome Jamie and Marcus to Washington, DC, with their compelling show about how we view people — even friends –whose backgrounds and circumstances are different from our own,” says Howard Shalwitz, Woolly Mammoth Artistic Director. “They are fellow theatre leaders, thinkers, and charismatic performers — and with the novel, semi-improvised format of Winners and Losers, they bare their souls in a way we rarely see on stage.”

Toronto-based director Chris Abraham will lead the production team, joined by Jonathan Ryder (lighting designer) and Elia Kirby (stage manager/production manager).

Woolly is pleased to be presenting Winners and Losers in association with Theatre Replacement, Neworld Theatre and Crow’s Theatre of Canada. Theatre Replacement is an ongoing collaboration between James Long and Maiko Yamamoto. The company continues to build and tour work, and has been presented at internationally recognized festivals and venues. Neworld Theatre is an award-winning, Vancouver-based theatre company that creates, produces and tours new plays and performance events. The company is led by Artistic Director Marcus Youssef and Artistic Producer Adrienne Wong. Founded in 1983 by Jim Millan, Crow’s Theatre seeds projects and collaborations with artists and companies that are engaged in the examination of our culture’s pivotal narratives in ways that are direct yet complex, entertaining and challenging.
