ABC News ‘Nightline’ Opens Cold Case in Multiplatform Docu-Series ‘A Murder on Orchard Street,’ Premiering on Tuesday, October 3

On average, over 5,000 homicides have gone unsolved each year over the last two decades, according to the FBI. With its signature journalistic style that invites viewers to immerse themselves in the story, ABC News “Nightline” examines the twists and turns of one intriguing unsolved murder in the new multiplatform docu-series “A Murder on Orchard Street” premiering Tuesday, October 3. The seven-part narrative, which will be available across all ABC News digital platforms, select streaming platforms and adapted into a podcast produced by ABC Radio, features unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the NYPD’s investigation, from the first moments after the homicide of 25-year-old Burke O’Brien in 2003 to present day. Additionally, each week “Nightline” will take a deep dive into cutting edge policing, examining the various tools, tactics and technology that detectives use in their investigations.

In “A Murder on Orchard Street,” ABC News producer and reporter Christina Kiely, who covered the O’Brien case moment-to-moment in 2003, joins ex-NYC detective Kenny Silvia in a renewed effort to solve the crime and bring the murderer(s) to justice. While reviewing original case footage, Kiely stumbles upon a possible new lead that could change the course of the case completely. The series features nearly every player involved in the case – both then and now – including the detectives, the victim’s family and the people who were there in those fateful final moments.

“Taking a fresh look at a captivating case like this one allows us an opportunity to creatively showcase our rich archive in a new and dynamic way,” said Roxanna Sherwood, Executive Producer of the series. “My hope is that the story will engage the public to help unravel new details and clues that could mean the difference for a family waiting so long to see justice done.”

The premiere episode begins in the winter of 2003 – 25-year-old O’Brien is murdered in cold blood on a January morning in downtown Manhattan. As O’Brien’s family mourns the loss of their son, detective Silvia is assigned to the case and works to put a killer behind bars.

Starting Tuesday, October 3, the first five episodes will be available to watch on ABCNews.com, the ABC News apps and streaming platforms including Roku, Apple TV, Hulu and Xbox One. On the same day, ABC Radio will launch the weekly podcast which Kiely will narrate, with episodes available to download, subscribe or listen to on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play Music, TuneIn and ABCNewsPodcasts.com.
