Summer with Shakespeare 2016
A camp for young artists ages 6-18, June 13 – July 15

(Pasadena, CA – May 9, 2016)  — A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, presents Summer With Shakespeare—a five-week Pasadena summer camp, June 13th to July 15th, 2016 (Monday-Friday 10am -4pm) for youth aged 6-18. There is currently very limited availability for the 10-18 year old  segments of the program; to register for remaining spots (mostly for the 6-9 year olds track), please contact Alicia Green, Director of Education, at 626.356.3104 or email [email protected].

At the camp, kids stay active, learn new skills, and have fun when they attend this annual conservatory-style program of acting, improvisation, stage diction, text analysis, kinetic exercises, and stage combat. Classically trained professional actors, choreographers, and designers lead the camp’s sessions.

Summer With Shakespeare participants of all ages gain an appreciation for the Bard’s verse and exposure to a variety of classic plays. This five-week, intensive camp challenges them to be both scholars and performers of Shakespeare while it enhances their acting and public speaking skills, builds self confidence on the stage, while offering invaluable experience in theater craft. Camp even includes classes on magic and improv.

Summer with Shakespeare includes five fun-filled weeks of learning and performing, where kids can focus on:

  • Acting
  • Stage Combat
  • Mask Work
  • Voice
  • Movement
  • Stagecraft and Design
The camp session culminates with each of the three age-based divisions performing for an audience on the Theatre’s main stage. The young actors from The Play’s The Thing (14-18 years old) perform The Comedy of Errors on Thursday, July 16, with a cast party on July 17. All the World’s a Stage (6-9 years old) study The Bard’s comedies, tragedies, histories and romances then mount a Shakespeare play over the last two weeks, making sets, costumes, and choreographing dances for their performance.

Education and Community Outreach Director Alicia Green, who holds a master’s degree in educational theater from NYU’s Steinhardt School, administers ANW’s summer programs.  She advises, “Our camp is unique in that each of the three levels imparts social interaction and skill sets that have been designed to be entirely age appropriate. Equally important, our campers have the unique experience of working with established professionals in the theatrical arts.”

Summer With Shakespeare takes place Monday, June 13th – Friday, July 15th 2016, Monday – Friday from 10am to 4pm (no camp on Monday, July 4th, Independence Day).  A Noise Within is located on the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Sierra Madre Villa Avenue at 3352 East Foothill Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107.
