JONATHAN BISS, PIANO:
ONLY NEW YORK SOLO RECITAL THIS SEASON

Saturday, January 24, 8:00 PM
Jonathan Biss, Piano

92Y Kaufmann Concert Hall

Jonathan Biss goes time-travelling through Vienna, presenting a fascinating interplay of music written at opposite ends of a century—and of musical styles.

Beethoven’s first published sonata is paired with Berg’s first (and only) sonata, a lush masterpiece of the Second Viennese School. A set of dreamy miniatures by the Romantic Schumann contrasts with a set by the twelve-tone pioneer Schoenberg. Biss ends his only New York solo recital of the season with the monumental piano sonata that launched Beethoven’s “late period.”

Mr. Biss will be releasing the fourth volume of his Beethoven cycle the Tuesday following this concert. Also in January, prior to the concert, along with Coursera and the Curtis Institute of Music, he will relaunch his massive online open course (MOOC), Exploring Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas, in a new format. The second part of the course—on additional Beethoven sonatas—will launch in Spring 2015. Mr. Biss reached more than 55,000 students when the course was first offered in 2013.

SHAI WOSNER AND THE PARKER QUARTET:
THE SCHUBERT EFFECT

Wednesday, January 28, 7:30 PM
Shai Wosner and the Parker Quartet
92Y Kaufmann Concert Hall

Shai Wosner and the Parker Quartet—five extraordinarily gifted artists—take us on a journey exploring Schubert’s unique compositional world and his influence on contemporary composers.

According to Mr. Wosner, “Schubert’s sense of time has a certain duality to it— almost a kind of a Schubert Effect—that makes it seem as if time is somehow magically both moving and suspended. This expansiveness is in the very nature of Schubert’s music, regardless of duration. It can be felt from bar to bar and in the moment, as the music unfolds with a spontaneity that doesn’t tell us if a piece will last five minutes or fifty.”

Schubert’s effect reaches across the centuries to touch the great composers of our time. Fragments of the Sonata in A resonate within Missy Mazzoli’s Isabelle Eberhardt, and Kurtag’s Aus der Ferne V echoes the second movement of Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden.” Shai Wosner and the Parker Quartet have worked in the past with Hungarian composer Gyorgy Kurtag personally and have purposefully paired him with Schubert to portray astonishing relationships within both men’s artistic spirit.

JENNIFER KOH, VIOLIN
CONCLUDES BACH & BEYOND SERIES

Saturday, January 31, 8:00 PM
Jennifer Koh, Violin
92Y Kaufmann Concert Hall

Violinist Jennifer Koh is recognized for her intense, commanding performances, delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance. The exploration of Bach’s music and its influence in today’s musical landscape has played an important role in Ms. Koh’s artistic journey. Her interpretations of Bach’s solo works, both in marathon recitals and paired with contemporary pieces, have been praised as thoughtful, intense, energetic and beautifully phrased.

Ms. Koh finishes her multi-year exploration of the great Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, in relationship with brand new contemporary music that responds to Bach’s legacy. In this final installment Bach’s rich contrapuntal sonatas are paired with Berio’s dramatic Sequenza VIII and the world premiere of For Violin Alone by the American composer John Harbison (The Great Gatsby). As Ms. Koh explains, “This final concert explores the idea of development by highlighting of the fugal form in both Bach’s works and in our contemporaries.”
